The Armstrong Reading Council was organized in 1960-1961 to provide teachers and administrators an opportunity to continue professional development and to contribute to the advancement of literacy in Armstrong County.
Dr. Clara E. Cockerille-teacher and former Armstrong County Assistant superintendent of school and professor of education at Westminster College– was instrumental in the organization of the council. Her dedication to education was honored in 1977 when the Armstrong County Reading Council petitioned KSRA and IRA to change the group’s name to the Clara Cockerille Reading Council.
The name of the council was changed again in 1988 to Armstrong Reading Council. Today the memory of Dr. Cockerille is honored each year with the presentation of the Clara Cockerille Literacy Award to those in the community who are actively promoting literacy. Dr. Cockerille continues to influence the focus of the organization as it works to continue the high standards she epitomized.
